8/25/2009 Review of Iola Vintage Military & Gun Show with Vi
Yes, we claim a good Vintage Military & Gun Show with Vintage Tractors and Equipment show. Held the weekend of August 8th and 9th, it was our 18th event. Even with the weather and storms we had hanging around us, the attendees made the best of it. Sorry to say our numbers was down just a little. I believe moral and friendliness was at its highest - also in other words there wasn't many problems, complaints or disgruntled people. We had many compliments and thank you from participants and spectators about our event. Naturally swap vendors and Military Vehicles were down because of the National MVPA going on but yet there was a couple of those vendors that made the trek back from Indiana to Iola fast to take in a day or two. We appreciate their effort. Vendors outside and inside were happy with sales I hear. We were rewarded for the first time in a long time with the Army Reserve 428th Engineer Company from Wausau, WI. They brought equipment and tents. The Explorer Post from Wisconsin Rapids was present again this year and posted colors each morning. There were many others that supported our event with their military vehicles and equipment. Many people see this support and we at the office thank you for your time, energy and support. The Encampment area was busy with re enactors. The re enactments on Saturday and Sunday afternoon was very well attended and a show in its self. Respectively the re enactors are promoting the preservation of our history and we respect them for their involvement. The Vintage Tractors and Equipment were busy in their area with many demonstrations of working machines. The games they had with the tractors and the running of the engines was educational up close for visitors. Early on Saturday the Oneida Nation provided a VFW historian who developed a power point presentation on the history of the code talkers. In the evening a veterans honor guard and the Oneida dancers performed to start off the show on Saturday. The USO Type Show was enjoyed by many and the music from The Justmann Band was entertaining of the big band time and into the '70s era. Fashions of the time brought memories back to many as models walked the stage in vintage clothing. Numbers: Attendance for spectators and attendees is at 7,231. This is down 572 from 2008 - (not to bad). Military Vehicles - 55. Swap spaces 341. Re enactors - 109, Indoor Swap - 21, Exhibit tables - 15, Gun Show Tables-83, Family Camp sites - 45. Vintage Tractors and Equipment area had 131. The Community Blood Center had a late start because of rain but recruited 11 blood donors. Our goal was to provide an organized event that promotes the conservation, preservation, history and display of historical military and vintage tractors & equipment. This weekend is important for the role of veterans and the peace and freedom many gave. Again, we are looking forward to next year being larger and better. Dates for 2010 will be August 14-15th and we're looking forward to it. Sincerely, Mary Schwartz

3/18/2009 Native American Indian Code Talkers - Presentation
Saturday, August 8, will feature a presentation on the Native American Indian Code Talkers. Code Talkers were Native Americans who served in the United States Marine Corps whose primary job was to transmit secret tactical messages. Code talkers transmitted these messages over military telephone/radio communications using formal or informally developed codes built upon their native languages.
